Sterling Silver Celtic Cross Drop Earrings - 16mm (SE1710)
The Celtic cross has been one of the defining symbols of Scotland's spiritual and decorative heritage for over a thousand years, its ringed form found carved into standing stones from Iona to Aberdeenshire. The combination of the Latin cross with the encircling ring is understood to reflect both early Christian faith and older Celtic cosmological thinking, the circle representing eternity and wholeness. The translation of the Celtic cross into earring form draws on a long tradition of miniaturised devotional and emblematic silverwork in Scotland, where the cross has appeared across jewellery, Highland dress accessories and ecclesiastical metalwork throughout the centuries.
Each earring presents a miniature Celtic cross suspended from a smooth teardrop-shaped stud above, the two elements connected by a small ring that allows the cross to hang freely. The crosshead is ringed, with four flared arms extending from a central interlaced panel, the knotwork at the crossing point clearly defined. The ring that encircles the crosshead carries further knotwork detail along its inner face. The descending shaft is broad and carries embossed interlaced knotwork along its full length, the detail consistent and well-resolved. The finish throughout is an oxidised silver, the darkened recesses giving strong contrast to the raised knotwork surfaces. Push back fitting on the stud above.
Approximately 2.1g per pair. 925 sterling silver with oxidised finish. Push back fitting.
