Sterling Silver & Green Stone Celtic Knot Ring (SSR8990)
The use of interlaced knotwork to decorate the full band of a ring is one of the most accomplished expressions of the Celtic silversmith's art, requiring the continuous strand to resolve correctly as it travels around the circumference of the shank without interruption or repetition. The tradition of setting a stone at the centre of such a band has deep roots in Scottish and Celtic metalwork, the stone providing a visual anchor to the knotwork that surrounds it. The broad band format gives the knotwork sufficient field to develop with genuine complexity, the pattern readable and well-resolved across the full width of the ring.
This ring presents a broad, flat-profile band worked in open interlaced plaitwork knotwork across its full visible face. The knotwork is open-worked, its strands clearly defined against the negative spaces between them, the pattern continuous around the band on either side of the central setting. At the centre, an oval green stone sits in a smooth, clean bezel setting, its deep, saturated colour providing a strong focal point that anchors the composition. The stone is oriented horizontally, its longer axis following the line of the band. The inner shank is plain and smooth. The silver throughout carries a high mirror polish, the raised knotwork strands catching light against the open spaces between them.
925 sterling silver with oval green stone in bezel setting.
