Sterling Silver & Purple Stone Celtic Knot Round Pendant - 17mm (SP2210)
The circular Celtic knotwork pendant is one of the most accomplished forms in Scotland's decorative silver tradition, the disc or roundel providing a self-contained field for knotwork composition whose enclosed geometry lends itself to complex, radially symmetrical designs. The use of a continuous interlaced strand to generate a five-point radial composition within a circular field draws on the same geometric thinking found in the most sophisticated examples of Celtic manuscript art, where craftsmen developed systems of interlace capable of resolving into precise, balanced arrangements across any given format. The addition of a small stone at the convergence point of such a composition has deep roots in Celtic and Scottish metalwork, the stone anchoring the geometry with a focused point of colour.
This pendant presents a circular open knotwork composition in which five interlacing looped strands radiate from a central point, their crossings generating a five-pointed star form at the interior of the design. The outer perimeter of the composition has a near-circular profile, the looping strands resolving cleanly at the edge without a formal enclosing ring, giving the piece an open, organic boundary. At the very centre, a small round purple stone sits in a bezel setting, its violet tone providing a delicate and precisely placed focal point within the geometric interior. The strands are rounded in section and finished to a high mirror polish throughout. A smooth bail connects the pendant above.
17.2mm x 17.2mm. Weight approximately 1.84g. 925 sterling silver with round purple stone in bezel setting. Bail fitting.
