Sterling Silver Scottish Luckenbooth & Thistle Pendant - 15mm (SC1047)
The Luckenbooth is one of Scotland's most distinctive and enduring jewellery forms, its origins rooted in the goldsmiths' booths that lined the High Street of Edinburgh's Royal Mile from the fifteenth century onwards. Traditionally exchanged as a token of love and betrothal, the Luckenbooth's characteristic form of two intertwined hearts surmounted by a crown carried associations of loyalty, protection and devotion. It was worn pinned to clothing or given as a love token, and its symbolism remained strong across centuries of Scottish social and cultural life. The combination of the Luckenbooth with the Scottish thistle, Scotland's national emblem, brings together two of the country's most resonant decorative symbols within a single composition.
This pendant presents the classic Luckenbooth form of two intertwined elongated hearts, their stems crossing at the base and their upper curves rising together beneath a detailed crown. The crown sits centrally above the hearts, its points tipped with small star finials that give it a refined heraldic character. A small inner heart is visible at the centre of the composition where the two larger hearts overlap. At the lower right, a small naturalistic thistle head with a serrated leaf extends outward from the base of the pendant, its crosshatched globe and short floret crown clearly defined. The silver throughout carries a high mirror polish. A smooth bail connects the pendant above.
At 20mm x 15mm and approximately 1.4g, it is lightweight and finely detailed. 925 sterling silver. Bail fitting.
