Sterling Silver Scottish Nessie Piper Pendant - 25mm (SC1016)
The Loch Ness Monster and the bagpipes are two of Scotland's most internationally recognised symbols, the one rooted in the folklore of the Great Glen and the other in the musical and military traditions that have defined Scottish cultural identity for centuries. Nessie, first recorded in written accounts as far back as the sixth century and the subject of enduring fascination ever since, has become one of Scotland's most distinctive cultural exports. The bagpipes, meanwhile, have been central to Scottish ceremonial, military and folk music for hundreds of years, their sound inseparable from the country's public identity. The combination of the two in a single novelty form is a piece of distinctly Scottish humour, the kind of self-aware playfulness that has always sat comfortably alongside the more serious strands of Scottish decorative tradition.
This pendant presents Nessie in an upright, anthropomorphic form, the creature rendered as a walking figure playing a set of bagpipes. The long serpentine neck curves upward, the characteristic Nessie head and open mouth clearly defined at the top. The body is detailed with scaled texture throughout, suggesting the creature's reptilian character. The bagpipes are rendered with good detail, the bag, chanter and drones all represented. The figure walks on two hind legs, booted feet visible at the base. The silver carries a high mirror polish on the smoother surfaces, with the scaled and detailed areas providing contrast. A plain round ring fitting connects the pendant above.
At 25mm x 10mm and approximately 3.1g, it is tall and slender with strong sculptural character. 925 sterling silver. Ring fitting.
