Sterling Silver Scottish Thistle Pendant - 18mm (SC1006)
The thistle has been Scotland's national emblem for centuries, its origins as a symbol of Scottish identity rooted in both history and legend. Its association with resilience and defiance, a plant that endures harsh conditions and resists easy handling, made it a natural emblem for a nation that placed great store in those qualities. The thistle appears throughout Scotland's decorative arts, from heraldic carving on historic buildings to silverwork and Highland dress accessories, and remains one of the most immediately recognisable motifs in the Scottish jewellery tradition. The use of a plain circular outer ring to frame the thistle connects this design to a medallion tradition seen across Scottish heraldic metalwork, the clean geometric border giving the naturalistic central motif a formal, composed setting.
This pendant presents a naturalistic thistle within a smooth, flat circular outer ring. The thistle rises from the base of the ring on a short stem, its crosshatched globe sitting at the junction between stem and head, with a broad feathered crown of fine radiating florets above. Spiky, deeply serrated leaves extend outward on either side in an open, angular arrangement, their pointed tips reaching toward the inner edge of the enclosing ring and creating a strong, jagged silhouette within the circular frame. The contrast between the clean, uninterrupted line of the outer ring and the detailed, textured quality of the thistle within gives the piece a clear compositional structure. The silver throughout carries a high mirror polish. A plain round ring fitting connects the pendant above.
At 18mm x 18mm and approximately 2.1g, it is balanced and well-contained. 925 sterling silver. Ring fitting.
